Nick Saunders our founding father and first president began the journey by contacting Bill Phelan, then the officer of Mid-Atlantic Expansion. Nick had researched numerous fraternities looking to expand and ADG seemed to fit us the best. The foundation was laid. From there, Nick rounded up one of the most interesting bunch of men you will ever see; guys from all walks of life, some that never would have been friends except for their soon realized unity, ADG. Under the guidance of our C.E., Brian Carberry and many of the other brothers of Kappa at the time (Jim Smith, Bill Phelan, Alex Razzook, Frank Bonadonna, Neil Ducey and others), our pledging began after our pinning in March 2003. Many trying weeks later on April 26, 2003, 22 new brothers were inducted into the world of ADG as the Philadelphia University Colony.

Although looked at many times with skeptical eyes, we have accomplished a great deal in our short existence at our University, from numerous service projects, food drives, local charity work, soup kitchen help, the Special Olympics, car washes, information sessions, sporting events, study work, and as Nick puts it, “fundraisers”. Our chapter has also helped bring life to a small college only a few miles from Philly. Chestnut Hill Colony is following the same path to greatness that we took only two years ago.
We have come a long way since that night, and have since become the Alpha Beta chapter at the national convention in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in August 2004. We have inducted 8 new members through three different pledge classes and have solidified our reputation with the students. Our goal of having an organization that would enrich our college experience beyond getting “just an education” was not only realized but is being lived. I can personally say and I think I speak for all of our brothers that joining Alpha Delta Gamma was the best decision of my college career.

Chris “Bear” Grimm is the current president of Alpha Beta Chapter at Philadelphia University.
Text Box: Q: What do you believe to be the greatest contribution an active can make towards the fraternity on a National level?
Gamm: Going to a convention or conference. It’s brining a unique experience, different traditions and history, and talking to other actives, sharing ideas. There’s more interdependency on other chapters.
Q: What does it mean to you to be a part of a ‘fraternity for life?’
Gamm: It’s a sense of belonging, sense of accomplishment, because it’s something to be proud of, something unique, different. We’re unlike any others; we’re national, but not like guys in TKE, not a corporation of a large frat. But we are not just a local group either. It’s very unique.
Q: What do you think the National organization can do to change the ‘culture of the fraternity?’
Gamm: The culture can change if the actives keep the alumni involved and well aware of what’s going on. Not all alums live in the areas that have alumni associations. Maybe we should set up more contact groups by state, rather than locations near chapters.
Q: How do you personally view the Nat’l organization
(i.e. structure, role, purpose, efficiency, value)?
Gamm: I view it as a separate entity; they seem to take care more of the business aspect of the fraternity in general. They also setup examples for the chapters in regards to structure for government or council. It’s a big deal when they come to a chapter; we want to show we are performing well, so it gives a feeling of pride. Efficiency-wise, the past executive council has done an excellent job. We have a new chapter and another new colony. I would like to see more expansion in the west for colonies; Lambda is kind of alone right now, and they could use more contact.
Q: Where do you see yourself in regards to the fraternity in the next 5 years? Ten years? Twenty-five years?
Gamm: In 5 years, locally, I see myself as still being involved as a young alum, still
